Welcome to Aradia’s 2010/2011 season!
I am delighted to welcome you to Aradia’s second season of concerts at Glenn Gould Studio. We continue celebrating this gem among concert halls by presenting four concerts that marry innovation to tradition. Fresh from performing in Sulmona with The Centre for Opera Studies in Italy, Aradia will start its season with a semi-staged version of Handel’s opera Giulio Cesare. Back by popular request is our Dublin Messiah. The Toronto Star called us “upstarts” for presenting an alternative to other Titan Toronto Messiahs! Why not give ours a try! Baroque Idol! – a concert of new music for old instruments. Ten young composers will be invited to each present a five minute piece. Audience opinions will be taken into account and an audience prize awarded! Join the fun! Last but not least: Bach Plus One- a concert that juxtaposes works of J.S. Bach with contemporary dance and live drawing! This concert includes the 2nd Suite and the Cantata Ich habe genug with featured soprano soloist Virginia Hatfield.
I’m excited about our plans and hope to see you at the concerts!

Introducing our new 2010/11 Season in Glenn Gould Studio...

Giulio Cesare in Egitto
8pm Saturday September 11, 2010 | Glenn Gould Studio
Concert in conjunction with COSI
(The Centre for Opera Studies in Italy)
Semi-staged and sung in Italian
Fresh from performances in Italy, Aradia presents Giulio Cesare - arguably Handel’s greatest opera. We are led through a tale of violence, sex, political intrigue and human tragedy.
Handel was inspired to pen some of his most beautiful music— superb vocal writing, tense dramatic settings and inventive orchestral scoring.

The Dublin Messiah
8pm Saturday December 11, 2010 | Glenn Gould Studio
Catherine Rooney, Soprano | Marion Newman, Alto
Joseph Schnurr, Tenor | Sean Watson, Bass
Norman Engel, Trumpet
G. F. Handel Messiah in Original Version, Dublin 1742
It is requested the Favour of the Ladies not to come with Hoops this Day to the Musick-Hall in Fishamble Street. The Gentlemen
are desired to come without their swords.
Such was the request on April 13th, 1742 for the performance of Mr. Handel’s new Sacred Grand Oratorio, the Messiah. After considerable public reaction last year, Aradia is happy to repeat its reconstruction of this first performance. Please leave your swords at home!

The Aradia Ensemble
According to Robert Graves, Aradia was the daughter of Apollo’s twin sisters, who was sent by the gods to teach humankind to order the music of the natural world into song.
The Aradia Ensemble is based on Toronto, Canada, and specializes in presenting an eclectic blend of orchestral, operatic and chamber music played on original instruments. While focusing on the repertoire of seventeenth-century French and English music, Aradia also performs works by the Italian and German masters of the baroque, as well as contemporary pieces commissioned by the group.
We have made two music videos and one film soundtrack. We have also collaborated with Isadora Duncan and Baroque dancers, co-produced an opera, and worked with Balinese Gamelin. In July 2000, Aradia was the featured ensemble in residence at the New Zealand Chamber Music Festival, and in July 2001, we performed at the Musica nel Chiostro in Italy.
Aradia regularly performs in Toronto, often at the Gladstone Hotel on Queen Street West. These concerts are special because we play chamber music as it was meant to be played: in an intimate, informal setting, and on period instruments. These concerts are often LCBO licensed, so you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the music with a glass of wine.
